Despite the high economic value of tuna, many Filipino tuna fishers live in poverty, facing volatile markets, limited resources, and climate challenges. WWF-Philippines’ Sustainable Tuna Program has spent 14 years addressing these disparities by empowering fishers through the Catch to Cash traceability initiative, capacity-building activities, and group savings and loans committees. The program has also established the Philippine Tuna Handline Partnership, the country’s first MSC-certified fishery, and supported fishers in amplifying their voices on global platforms. Through these efforts, collectively known as the Strive to Thrive initiative, the program advances sustainability, equity, and resilience, helping tuna fishers secure fairer, more sustainable livelihoods.
